When is something a scam and when is it just someone failing to take action to make the business work?

When is a scam a scam and when is it just someone failing to take action to make the business work

It’s easy for some people to try a business opportunity – fail to do anything – fail to take any action – and then go onto Facebook or their blog and tell everyone it’s a scam.

Even worse they go out searching for others to tell them it’s a scam so they will feel better about failing. Because if the business opportunity is a scam then they have a valid reason to feel ripped off. It soothes their ego. Makes them feel slightly better – but not much.

Lets face it – we’ve all been ripped off at some point.

Heck – I have! I have had strangers across the other side of the world use my credit card – $1000 gone. Fraud that is.

Luckily I have not been scammed by people emailing me or calling me offering to fix my computer, or give me an estate of their long lost uncle, for 1 million dollars – they just need $1000 first to release the funds. Yeah right.

I am a Distributor of a Publicly listed MLM Company – and some people think it’s a scam.

Yes – the NYSE would accept a scam. 600 million customers. All scammed, and thirty years later they are still in business! The cheek of it! Scam is a word that is far too loosely thrown about in the circles of Affiliate marketing and Network Marketing.

If as many MLMs as critics say, are scams then the following would also be true;

  • If you tried to learn to play a musical instrument but gave up before you did. The money you spent on lessons and the instrument was scammed from you.
  • If you tried to learn a new language – but quit the classes after 3 months (90 days) – the money you spent on lessons was a rip off. The teacher couldn’t teach and they misled you into thinking you’d be fluent in Spanish in no time.

Something like 90% of small businesses (not connected to MLM or Network Marketing) – fail within the first 5 years.

If you start up your own small business, and you pay the lease on a shop for 12 months.

You buy stock for your shop – got to have something to sell right? $10,000-$50,000

You pay to get the shop fitted out so it looks cool. At least $20,000

You get some ads in the local paper, some flyers, and some local radio ads to get the buzz happening for your opening. $10,000 – $20,000

Each week once you are open you pay power, gas, rent, internet and email, stock replacement, staff wages, accounting, and taxes.

It was your brainchild. Your idea. You chose to do it. It’s not a franchise or anything.

6 months later you find the sales are not covering the rent. You decide to close with a heavy heart. You’ve lost your savings and now you have a personal loan as well. You still need to pay the rent for another 6 months so you have the stress of having to sub-let the shop.

If you applied the same logic as to why people in Network Marketing or other home business opportunities are accused of being scams – then this would surely be the biggest scam of all time!

The audacity to think you could succeed in your own business! But in reality – it’s just a dream up in smoke. It’s another failed business. That’s what happens.

Was it a failed business model? Was it lacking a system or training? Did it lack mentors and support?

Maybe.

But the strange thing is that most good Network marketing companies have a business model that works, they have training and systems, and they have mentors and leaders – yet 72% of people entering the business opportunity – QUIT – or FAIL.

Why do 72% of people fail in Network Marketing, MLM or Affiliate Marketing?

Why do 90% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years?

People often do not take action. They don’t educate themselves on what they need to know. Many do no marketing.

With Network Marketing specifically – I have seen many people come into my team thinking that literally by joining they would sit back and expect a cheque each month. I’m really not sure where they get this idea from – they don’t verbalise it but the expectation is there- ie no work lots of money.
